This house was designed by architect Gregory Gebruers for a mother and daughter who wished to live in a woodland area near Kalmthoutse Heide.
The composition of the family and the construction budget required a compact solution that had to include a home office. By joining two low volumes together round a central circulation axis efficient use is made of all the space. An obvious whole is created, with a daytime volume and a night-time volume. The exterior walls also follow the same logic. Steep roof surfaces means full use can be made of the upper storey and rounding off the ridge gives the traditional profile a contemporary appearance.
Choosing a solid wood construction is dictated by the context, the desire to use sustainable materials and the customer’s request for a natural interior. The facing brickwork was added at the local authorities’ request. The customer was fully involved in the design process, which resulted in a house with an identity of its own. |
